Jeffrey Philibert, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM (Oncology)

Portland Veterinary Specialists is proud to welcome Dr. Jeffrey Philibert to our group as the first board certified Veterinary Oncologist in the state of Maine.

Dr. Philibert is one of the original co-founders of the New England Veterinary Oncology Group (NEVOG), located in Waltham Massachusetts. During his tenure with NEVOG, Dr. Philibert has been actively involved in the multi-disciplined treatment of cancer including the conduct of many pivotal clinical trials leading to new drug development in the veterinary oncology field.  We are excited that Dr. Philibert will be bringing to our practice over a decade of clinical experience in cancer therapy for our patients.

Inspired by one of the original veterinary oncologists, Dr. Robert Rosenthal at the Veterinary Specialists of Rochester, New York where Dr. Philibert interned, he warmly says, “I immediately fell in love with the types of cases we saw and the dedication that clients of pets with cancer have.”  This lead to his completing the residency program in Comparative Oncology at Purdue University in 1999 and then serving as  a staff oncologist at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts prior to founding NEVOG in 2001.   During the last two years Dr. Philibert has also served as consultant in the Veterinary Pharmaceutical field and has a keen interest in avenues for improving patient care with new therapies and associated aspects of Comparative Oncology – the field that focuses on the fact that many of the naturally occurring cancers in our pet animal population closely resemble the same cancers seen in people allowing for the development and adaptation of similar diagnostic testing and therapeutic approaches.

Away from work, Dr. Philibert shares his life with his wife Christina, his two cats Cricket and Hannah, one dog, Penny, and his “three two legged animals at home” - his children - Bridgette, Alex and Natale.

When not spending his time at his kid’s school sporting events, Dr. Philibert enjoys the great outdoors including hiking, mountain bike riding, hunting, and a being a self described “fledgling fly fisherman.”

Laser Therapy

Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy is now available at PVS. Laser therapy is a surgery free, drug free, noninvasive treatment to reduce pain, reduce inflammation and increase speed of healing by inducing a biological resonse in the cells called "photo-bio-modulation". Laser therapy uses a beam of laser light to deeply penetrate tissue without damaging it. The laser light is delivered through a noninvasive hand piece to treat the affected area. Your pet may feel a gentle and soothing warmth. Most treatments take a matter of minutes. Laser therapy can be used to enhance other treatment plans recommended by your veterinarian. Laser therapy has been scientifically proven to be successful in treating post-surgical pain and many acute and chronic conditions, such as wounds, allergies, infections, cuts/bites, inflammation, sprains, strains and fractures, post-surgical healing & pain relief, degenerative joint disease, inflammatory bowel disease, lick granulomas, geriatric care, hip dysplasia, feline acne, tendonitis, arthritis and otitis to name a few.

Cardiology

Pimobendan is being studied for use in cats with congestive heart failure.  John MacGregor, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM Cardiology, co-authored an abstract in the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology on the use of pimobendan in cats.  170 cats were studied, and pimobendin appears to be well tolerated in cats with advanced heart disease, even when used with a variety of concurrent medications. Further randomized, controlled studies are currently being performed to assess pimobendan's effacacy for treatment of congestive heart failure in cats.
