Specialists are
veterinarians who obtain extensive, lengthy post-graduate training
(typically, four years beyond veterinary school) and experience.
They must then pass a credential review and a rigorous examination
process by the individual specialty board. Only when the veterinarian
has successfully satisfied all requirements of the respective specialty
board, he or she becomes "board certified" to practice
that specialty. The American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes
twenty-one specialty areas. |
